Barberton, South Africa

Where the work actually happens

Oil tubes, worn brushes, rusted iron fragments, and red earth sitting on the workbench waiting to find their way onto a canvas.

The Elements

Tools and accidents

Earth

Barberton red soil

Gathered from old mining sites and weathered tracks, the local earth brings physical grit and honest mineral pigment directly into the mix.

Metal

Oxidised iron and copper

Discarded metal scraps left out in the Mpumalanga weather. Their copper patinas and rust crusts offer textures no manufactured pigment can fake.

Process

The happy mistake

Some paintings are carefully planned. Others begin because I apparently cannot leave well enough alone and a spill becomes the best part.
